Year 10 English - Protest: Lock the Gate

'Lock the Gate' was inspired by the film Gaslands, which addresses the issues surrounding coal gas mining in America. 'Lock the Gate' is a brief look at part of the Queensland (Australia) situation - centered around Kingaroy, Dalby and Tara. Ian & Arkin Mackay hit the road for a three day drive to check it out... what unfolded was the realisation that coal gas mining is alive and thriving in the state... and so is an active protest movement. Veteran activist and environmental rights crusader, Drew Hutton has predicted that stopping Coal Gas mining will be "the biggest environmental campaign in Australian history"... and all indicators are that he's correct!

The potential for completely destroying aquifers, river systems and the best of Australia's food bowl is becoming a reality. Beyond the watch of the government and the industry, it is imperative that both CSG employees and the general public begin taking an active role in monitoring coal seam gas and shale operations. The aim of Gasileaks is to hold both government and industry accountable for actions that threaten the well being of communities.

They tell us coal seam gas is a cleaner greener fuel which will help reduce carbon emissions, but that is a lie. The methane which leaks from CSG drilling operations far outweighs any potential saving in CO2, and the hydrogen sulphide and radon released poison us all.
This documentary shows how the two biggest CSG projects in Australia's history were rail-roaded past the environmental impact assessment process without any consideration of how they will deplete Australia's limited ground water reserves or any determination of the amounts of gas released. These projects are expected to lower water tables by between 100 and 700 metres.
