What is a database?
- An electronic database is a comprehensive collection of information in electronic form and organized for quick retrieval via a computer.
- Each library database has a specific focus - a particular topic or subject (like an enormous book on science)
How is a database different from the internet?
- Authors get a fee for the content they contribute
- We pay for access (St Joseph's Regional College has paid for you) - the fee covers the cost of creating, organising and maintaining the collection of information
- You get access to scanned books; full-text articles; images; videos ... information that is not available for free on the net
As each database is a different collection of information (like each book is different) you pick the one you think is best for your needs for this assignment.
What is an eBook?
- Either, a digital copy of a printed book that you read off the screen
- or, an electronic book (a long piece of writing, 20,000 words or so) that you read off the screen
Go to Library Intranet course in Moodle to access EBSCO, World Book Online etc.
