One Night the Moon, based on a tragedy which occurred in 1932, tells of the search for a small white girl who wanders off one night from the family's remote home to follow the full moon. Her father won't allow the black tracker, Albert, on his land or let him participate in the search, instead fruitlessly leading a band of white men across desolate country. With no success, the missing girl's mother asks Albert for help and together they find the remains of her daughter. The story is based on that of Aboriginal tracker, Riley, who was awarded the Kings Medal for his services to the police force.
