Choose a current Australian legal issue from the list below to investiage using information technology. If you wish to investigate a current legal issue not on the list below, you must negotiate this with your teacher.

  • Mandatory sentencing : - Mandatory sentences are compulsory sentences imposed by statute for particular offences that remove general judicial sentencing discretion. Mandatory sentences are currently imposed for a range of minor offences in NSW, including traffic infringements.
  • "One punch laws in Australia" :- The societal and legal issue of alcohol fuelled violence and 'one punch' assaults has led to legislative change in a number of jurisdictions.
  • Impact of liquor reform laws in NSW :- Introduction and effectiveness of the 1.30am lockouts, 3am cessation of liquor sales, 10pm take-away liquor laws and the annual liquor licence fee program
  • Euthanasia in Australia : - Euthanasia, or voluntary assisted suicide, has been the subject of much moral, religious, philosophical, legal and human rights debate in Australia.
  • Cybercrime :- Information and communications technology impacts on law enforcement because of the way in which it can facilitate both lawful and unlawful activities. Crimes such as fraud, scams, and harrassment can be facilitated by using technology which brings unique challenges to old crimes. 
  • Law in SportThe law impacts on the way sporting organisations operate in a number of ways. Legal standards are set for playing the sport in a way which is safe for participants and spectators. The actions of sports people on the field and off the field can be subject to the criminal law. The use of performance enhancing drugs in sport and deciding contractual disputes between sports people and sporting organisations.
