There is some resentment in the Australian community regarding the provision of foreign aid to other countries. The Australian Parliament has referred these concerns to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Senate Committee for inquiry and report to the Parliament. Submissions are due to this Committee for consideration by Thursday 10 September 2020.

You are concerned and are passionate about assisting people, communities, and governments in developing countries. Your task is to research and write a submission for the consideration of the Senate Committee, discussing how giving aid is helping developing countries. The focus of your research will be on aid to Nepal by the Australian Government. (www.dfat.gov.au)

A sharp focus on our immediate neighbourhood

Aid in dollar terms
i. The Australian Government will provide an estimated $4.2 billion in total Official Development Assistance (ODA) in 2018-19. This makes Australia approximately the 12th highest donor amongst the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). (Refer to page 6 to 12)
